To open its new season of visual art exhibitions, the Nutshell is delighted to welcome renowned Winchester born photographer Simon Bray to present his project Loved&Lost.
Loved&Lost invites participants to explore their experience of loss through restaging a family photograph and recording an interview. It has been presented in galleries across the UK and featured on The One Show and BBC Breakfast TV, reaching an audience of over 10 million people. In 2020, Simon was commissioned by The Guardian to make a series of stories with participants who lost family members due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Nutshell will present eight stories from Loved&Lost, told through portrait photography, interview quotes and projected photofilms. This includes the first story that Simon made for the project on St. Giles’ Hill, Winchester, that of his mum and late father, which also features in the book, Loved&Lost - Volume 1, which will also be available.
“The contrast between the person now gone and the permanence of the setting is what makes the images so arresting.” The Guardian
Featuring stories made across the UK as well as locally, Loved&Lost draws upon a variety of relationships and scenarios of loss. It is our hope that this beautifully profound collection of heartfelt stories will invite viewers the opportunity to consider their loss whilst also putting themselves in the shoes of others.
“Although we all feel loss uniquely, we cannot hold onto it. That pain is something that needs to be shared and brought out into the open. It is my hope that Loved&Lost encourages people to do just that.” Simon Bray
