Guitarist Mike De Souza leads his quintet Rick Simpson (piano/synth), Tom Barford (tenor sax), Huw V Williams (bass), and Jay Davis (drums), on a tour celebrating his latest album Chrysalis (Fresh Sound New Talent). Written post-lockdown, the title alludes to the emergence from a state of isolation, having changed in a positive way, just as a butterfly emerges transformed from its chrysalis state.
Fierce moments of high energy and introspective periods of calm and impressionistic beauty blend with multiple melodic layers and juxtaposition between acoustic and electronic sound to create an uplifting set that at times evokes a mood reminiscent of alternative-rock bands such as Radiohead, or indie-folk bands such as Big Thief, yet retains the risk-taking, exploration, and language of jazz.

A mother and daughter’s reflections of Hampshire’s natural beauty through photography and textile sculpture.
ROOTS is the debut collaborative exhibition of mother and daughter Tricia Porter and Lauren Pruen, both established artists whose work has been shown within the UK and internationally.
This special exhibition will showcase Tricia Porter’s landscape photography, featuring images taken over an 18-year period. The captivating pieces, depicting both wide vistas and close, often overlooked details of the natural world, will form a backdrop to Lauren’s delicate fabric-and-wire sculptures of Hampshire’s native plants.
Hampshire is a county Tricia and Lauren both call home, and it has been pivotal to their development as artists. Through their interpretations of the local area, Tricia and Lauren aim to spark the imagination of the viewer and inspire a new appreciation for the diverse, often fragile natural environment.
The exhibition is part of the Hampshire Open Studios week and is being held at The Nutshell, Winchester’s central gallery space and theatre arts venue.
