The Nutshell and the University of Winchester are bringing together students, young people and members of the local community on Saturday 16th March for a script-in-hand performance of Lucy Kirkwood’s ‘howl’ of a play, Maryland.

Lucy wrote Maryland in just two days provoked by the killings of Sabina Nessa, Sarah Everard, Bibaa Henry, Nicole Smallman and Zara Aleena in a short space of time in England. She says, “This play was for many years a private conversation with myself…a way of expressing what I feel about a culture of violence against women, but I am sharing it because I wonder if it might express a little of what other people feel about it too.”

This is a powerful play which deals with difficult issues, opening up the subject of gender violence. Yet it is also much funnier than you might expect introducing a chorus of modern-day furies who speak with unified anger, disbelief, despair and bouts of unsettling humour.

Lucy Mangan writing in the Guardian said "Maryland is weeks, months, years, generations of pain and fury distilled into something truly powerful. I would like to see a recording, or a script pressed into the hands of every schoolgirl, to arm them for the struggle. And every schoolboy. Because not all men, but more men than you think."
