A mother and daughter’s reflections of Hampshire’s natural beauty through photography and textile sculpture.

ROOTS is the debut collaborative exhibition of mother and daughter Tricia Porter and Lauren Pruen, both established artists whose work has been shown within the UK and internationally.

This special exhibition will showcase Tricia Porter’s landscape photography, featuring images taken over an 18-year period. The captivating pieces, depicting both wide vistas and close, often overlooked details of the natural world, will form a backdrop to Lauren’s delicate fabric-and-wire sculptures of Hampshire’s native plants.

Hampshire is a county Tricia and Lauren both call home, and it has been pivotal to their development as artists. Through their interpretations of the local area, Tricia and Lauren aim to spark the imagination of the viewer and inspire a new appreciation for the diverse, often fragile natural environment.

The exhibition is part of the Hampshire Open Studios week and is being held at The Nutshell, Winchester’s central gallery space and theatre arts venue.

Home is Another Country

Home Is Another Country: Stories from the Ukrainian Community in Winchester

What does it take to leave your home because of war? Two years on from the full-scale Russian invasion in Ukraine, British photographer Lottie Stevenson has collected stories from members of the Ukrainian community in Winchester who have arrived since February 2022. 

Home Is Another Country is a reflection of the humanitarian front line. In deliberate contrast to images of violence and destruction, this exhibition focuses on the personal impact of war, exploring the effect on individuals and families, and revealing the generational trauma of conflict.

While the work exposes the challenges of migration in wartime, it also highlights the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit, sharing moving accounts of hope, humour and inspiration. Through a combination of portraits and still lives, Home Is Another Country captures experiences from children, teenagers, adults and grandparents, bearing witness to the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian community. 

Lottie Stevenson is a photojournalist and filmmaker living in Winchester. Lottie was a host in the Winchester district who shared her home with a Ukrainian family and has created this project as a volunteer with the support of Winchester City Council.

LOTTIE STEVENSON

Lottie Stevenson is a photojournalist and filmmaker covering conflict, inequality, and social injustice. Since 2022 she’s worked in Ukraine, Romania, Poland and Moldova reporting extensively on the refugee crisis and capturing stories of people affected by the war. 

Her family hosted a mother, daughter, and a student from Kyiv. Learning about their experiences in Ukraine and witnessing the challenges of adapting to life in the UK inspired this project.

She spent more than a decade as a journalist for the BBC and now works for organisations like Oxfam, the OSCAR Foundation, Share Action, Refugee Resource, and the NHS. Her work has been published by The Guardian, The Independent, and the Evening Standard. 

She lives in Winchester with her husband and three children.
